Lee (finally) files Charges with Ethics

Months after suspending Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, Mayor Ed Lee has submitted a list of charges that are the basis for his suspension and effort to remove Mirkarimi.

In a 12-page document, Lee outlines six Counts with statements and claims that are certain to be disputed on both a factual and relevance basis before the Commission. (Read the Mayor’s submitted charges here).

Lee’s charges include a claim that Mirkarimi is guilty of Official Misconduct as a member of the Board of Supervisors, although Mirkarimi does not currently sit on the Board. Among the offenses Lee cites are actions that tend to bring the Board of Supervisors into disrepute, possibly setting a standard that will be difficult for all supervisors to meet at all times.

By waiting until the close of business on a Friday to file the charges, Lee was adopting a strategy often used when officials hope that their actions will get little public attention.

CitiReport will provide updates as needed.
